Appearance
Adult : small, greenish brown (A. gossypii) and black (A. craccivora). There are two forms; winged sexual forms and wingless forms that reproduce parthenogenetically (without fertilisation) and give birth to live young.
Life Cycle
Females produce 8-22 nymphs per day; nymphs moult four times before becoming adults. Entire life cycle takes 7-9 days.
Notes
Highly polyphagous and transmit several plant diseases. Both nymphs and adults suck plants sap from tender shoots, stems and leaves, resulting in stunted growth and leaf curl. Secretes honey-dew, which causes a sooty mould and reduction in photosynthetic activity of the plant. Also enjoys the protection of ants.
